So, today at the Facebook f8 conference the giant released their contribution to the location war; Facebook presence, and it looks pretty cool.
At the conference, all visitors was given a RFID tag to swipe at locations around the conference area. When swiped, a status message goes straight to your Facebook profile. Of course, for this, the RFID tag needs to be linked to an account.

This is probably nothing we will see in Sweden, as it requires “stations” to swipe your tag, i.e. a pretty big investment for whoever “owns” a location.
There is a way to solve the big investment issue; the use of QR codes. I think the best way of controlling the check-ins would be to only allow check-ins through QR codes or the RFID tag system (of course, RFID is waaay cooler).
The actual use of this location system? Not one clue. But the conference has hardly started, so there probably be more of this…
So far, Slick Nick approves location based social media with RFID tags!
